Kauai Sea Farm combines restoration of the historic Nōmilu Fishpond with modern sustainable aquaculture practices and responsible stewardship of the surrounding environment.

Solar Power

The Nōmilu Fishpond and surrounding property are completely off-grid. Farm operations are powered by solar energy, supported by 84 kWh of battery storage and a 9 kW backup generator.

The solar power system is monitored and managed remotely over the web, along with the farm's solar-powered security cameras. The system is designed to accommodate additional capacity as farm operations expand.

Environmental Stewardship

The water exchange between Nōmilu Fishpond and the ocean has historically contributed to healthy and abundant fishing along the adjacent shoreline. Algae released from the pond attracts shoreline fish, and local fishermen have reported seeing and catching more local varieties of fish since the Nōmilu ʻauwai were reopened.

The shoreline along the Nōmilu property is also a resting place for endangered Hawaiian monk seals and green sea turtles. The feeding grounds and isolation of the property allow these animals to rest along Nōmilu's sandy beaches and rocky outcroppings with minimal disturbance from humans.

Kauai Sea Farm works with the Department of Land and Natural Resources Aquatics Division to help identify and report injured or diseased animals. DLNR personnel visit Nōmilu regularly to check tagged and marked animals.
