Grant Recipients Want to Restore Kauaʻi, Mauka to Makai
The Garden Island profiled Kauai Sea Farm as one of two South Shore organizations receiving Kauaʻi County Innovation Grants for environmental restoration projects.
The article describes Kauai Sea Farm's work at historic Nōmilu Fishpond as "restorative aquaculture" — combining Native Hawaiian practices, contemporary aquaculture science, and restoration of the pond's natural ecosystem.
At the time of the article, Kauai Sea Farm was operating a completely solar-powered facility near the fishpond with water-filtration systems supporting its aquaculture work.
Kauai Sea Farm received a $49,213 Innovation Grant through a partnership with conservation nonprofit Hoʻomalu Ke Kai. The project was presented as part of a larger effort to develop Nōmilu into a model for sustainable aquaculture, local food production, environmental restoration, and employment on Kauaʻi.
